So, here in mexico, a “established artist” (Whatever it means) can act like a real douchebag just because he’s stablished. Wow.
Some writer asked for an artist to draw his comic in a facebook group, thus he could be showing it at a mexican con. So it catched some curiosity about he was and all that, especially because he wasn’t offering any payment (He specified), instead making a really important question: Are mexican comics done in a rush? Are they lack of quality? Well, i think no. There are good mexican comics and there are others that i don’t like. We have a small scene yet, but i think we are working on that, joining writers and artists talents.
Then, this became a really harsh discussion about the guy asking for an artist, because the other authors were like making fun of him, and i think that’s ok, BUT someone said he wanted to do something like that (Asking for artist and just credit them as a payment). Suddenly another author said that he could do that because he was established. I asked her what should one need to be established and finally hace the possibility to ask for an artist. Needless to say it was more a exclusionary answer like “HE CAN DO IT, YOU CAN’T BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT ESTABLISHED”.
I felt consternated because i think this:
No matter what, who you are, what you do, how wealthy you are, how smart you are. You can make comics, and to me they are an artistic way to express yourself.
I think this, because comic industry in mexico has these holy cows who can’t be touched, not even criticized and they start to say who can do this and that. That’s not ok.
So, go out there and tell a story in comics, no matter how you draw them, or if you ask someone to draw it for you. Nobody else can tell the story you want, and nobody has the right to say you can’t ask for help.
